Worries, worries, worries…

Have you ever been really worried or anxious about something? Not just a little, but a lot?

Worried about your situation…
The awful, horrible and dark feeling of wanting to give up, of not seeing a way out… You wonder if things will ever change.

Worried about relationships…
The pressures and expectations that teachers, parents and peers can have of you can cause a lot of stress. Maybe you are worried about being single.

Worried about the future…
What will 2011 bring? Will it bring what you are hoping for? Or will it be worse? Maybe you’re graduating soon and you’re nervous about what will be next.

Sometimes worries simply come over you like a dark cloud and it seems like there is no sunshine

What do you do?
When you are stressed & worried, or maybe even despairing & panic-ing, it won’t just go away. You need to take action! How? The Bible says you need to take every thought ‘captive’ and bring it before God (2 Cor 10:5).

Stress & worries can only be helped when you focus your mind on the things of God. I’ve often cried out to God to help me calm down, to see him, to experience him. And the more I would read in the Bible and pray, the calmer I would get.

Practically:
* Read the Bible (especially Psalms)– Move the focus of your mind from your worries to God’s words
* Listen to Music — Perhaps you know a song that you like about God’s love
* Write! — A great way to make sense of your emotions is to write them down. Thoughts untangle as they come onto paper.
* Get some rest & pray– Take a moment to be by yourself. Take a hot bath for example, anything that helps you to relax, so you can talk with God about your worries and anxieties.
* Start an encouragement journal. Whenever someone writes you an encouraging note, print it out and put it in your journal. Put anything in there that helps you to focus on God’s love for you. You can also write out these verses in your journal:

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7

When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.” – Psalm 94:19

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.” – Matthew 6:33

I do not know what your situation is or what you are going through, but if you read this, please know that there is hope! No matter how impossible your situation may be, it WILL change! I am sure of it!

You have an awesome Creator who loves you more than you will ever understand. He is ready to help you, but you need to take the first step and ask for his help and presence in your life. You could pray:

“Dear God, to be honest with you, I really dislike the situation I am in right now. The stress, the anxiety, the worries that fill my mind at this moment are too much to bear. But I know that you are there and that you care about me, even when I might not feel it. Will you please fill my heart with your peace and help me to calm my thoughts? I trust you and I put my hopes in you. Amen”

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds…” – Philippians 4:6-8
