Dealing with your ‘not-so-great’ sides

No one is perfect! We all have ‘blind spots’: parts of our character & personality that are ‘ugly’ and need some serious work.

The bummer thing is that we cannot see these parts of us very well, otherwise we would have probably done something about it already. The only way to find out is by asking other people to point them out.

But how do you know if that other person is really right about your blind spots? There is one very easy way to find out: if your immediate response is to become defensive and to make excuses when they tell you about it! Crazy, but true.

It takes a tremendous amount of courage and humility to ask a close friend or family member (someone that knows you well and will tell you the truth in a loving way) about our blind spots, to listen graciously and then to work on it diligently.

Not easy! But you’ll become a better ‘you’!

Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed (Eccl. 4:9)

Try it with one very close friend/family member today!

Go up to him/her and have a quiet sit-down and say:
“You know, I want to work on becoming a better person. Is there anything in my life you notice that I could use some improvement?”

It might take a while to probe and push them to say something, but if you show them you really want to know and you genuinely want to grow, it will come! Watch as your defense mechanisms will go up! Stay patient and listen and ask more questions! You are growing in your character tremendously while doing that!

I’m so proud of you for trying!
